Taxonomies Pro Bono Program
The Taxonomies & Controlled Vocabularies SIG runs a free taxonomy creation service for non-profit organizations for small web taxonomies. This program benefits the organization, the SIG and its members by raising the visibility of taxonomies in general, promoting the Taxonomies & Controlled Vocabularies SIG and its members, and helping members gain demonstrable experience.
About the Program
The typical service provided by the program is as follows:
- A hierarchical taxonomy of 2-3 levels deep
- In a range of approximately 30 - 100 terms total
- Can be a hierarchy or comprising multiple facets
- The taxonomy will be created remotely (i.e. completely off-site)
- The taxonomy creation project will have a deadline requiring less than full-time work to create (4 hours or less in a day, 20 hours or less than a week)
- The taxonomy will be provided in one of the following forms: text, Excel, csv, or XML
- The taxonomist will not provide continual updates to the taxonomy
Taxonomists who wish to participate in the program must be a member of Taxonomies & Controlled Vocabularies SIG and have some prior taxonomy experience or training. Preference will go to those members who are listed as offering contract services on the web site. Each taxonomy created under the program is reviewed by another taxonomist prior to delivery.
The non-profit organization will be expected to commit to:
- Make the taxonomy publicly accessible (volunteers do this for free so they can demonstrate their work)
- Keep the taxonomy available and accessible on the site for at least a year (while no guarantee is expected, the taxonomy should not be intentionally temporary)
- Acknowledge the creator of the taxonomy in some form (name mentioned somewhere on the site)
Further Information
Enquiries about the service should be directed to the SIG manager, Moira Calder
